Network Marketing Tip: Beware of Bookmarking Spam
Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 05:32PM In business, especially internet marketing, your reputation is your life. Your business success literally hangs in the balance of public opinion. Once lost, your reputation as a good web citizen will be hard to reclaim. So please, take this network marketing tip to heart and avoid bookmarking spam (or any spam) so your internet network marketing business will thrive.
Bookmark and link Spam is a big problem the whole web 2.0 community must come to grips with or we are in danger of killing the goose that’s laying our golden eggs.
I can hear you hollerin already, “Shelly, what the heck are you talkin about?” Let me explain...
Recently, I was doing some bookmarking and discovered that Propeller will no longer accept submissions from Hubpages because they consider everything that comes from that domain (the whole site!) to be spam. The same thing is true of Ezine articles over at Digg.
This is a glaring example of why we MUST learn good bookmarking practices.
If the powers that be, come to believe that only Spam comes out of web 2.0 sites like Hubpages, Ezine Articles and Squidoo, then we are on our own. We’ll be back to paying for hosting for ANY content we want to put out on the web. We won’t be able to leverage off the “clout”, reputation and page rank of places like Squidoo.
In fact, the situation over at Digg may be one of the reasons that Ezine Articles has recently (and still is) rewriting their submission policies.
I know it’s a pain to try and figure out what is allowed and what’s not. But stick with it… especially in places that are strict… because what they are doing is protecting their reputation of excellence and therefore they are protecting yours too.
Look at strict and ever changing web 2.0 site submission policies as a good thing.
By learning and following the rules at web 2.0 sites, like Ezine Articles, you are leveraging off the THOUSANDS of Dollars they pay to an army of experts that research this topic.
If someplace like Hubpages says what you’re doing will be seen by Google as Spam… don’t yell at them… make your stuff comply then get down on your knees and thank them for saving you from certain internet marketing doom… they just saved you from becoming the most hated of all internet marketing scum… A SPAMMER!
So what exactly is todays network marketing tip?
Ok, I'll spell it out for you...
When you’re frustrated, angry and confused because your submission has been rejected for the “umpteenth” time or Hubpages Unpublished ALL your articles (yes, this happened to me) go get a pillow and have a good primal screaming session!
THEN read the rules at least 3 more times. Look over your submissions and go FIX THEM. Make your content comply with the new or revised standards.
These are NOT arbitrary decisions these companies have made just to annoy you… no matter how much you think they are at the time. It’s in your best interest to apply what you learn to all your content. Not just the stuff for that particular site.
This network marketing tip... Following good linking and bookmarking practices... will preserve your reputation as an internet marketer with integrity and keep you in Google’s good graces, both now and in the future.

Shelly, Well said - such good reminders when we are frustrated with the details - Thank you for your leadership.

Great message, Shelly. Just like parents...they're ususally looking out for your own good, but it can be very frustrating to not be allowed to just do what you want. We need to learn to look for the good in these situations that are often so disappointing. It's always there. Just keep looking until you find it.
God bless!
Shelly,
Everything is tightening up, and you're right, compliance with the rules is an absolute.
Every marketer will not only help themselves, but the internet network marketing community as a whole, if they follow the exact language of all guidelines, terms and conditions at each bookmarking location and social media sharing site.
To KNOW is to GROW,
Eric Walker
Thanks guys, I appreciate your kind words.
You have no idea how frustrated I was when HubPages UNPUBLISHED "ALL" my articles. I came VERY close to throwing in the towel.
But after a tantrum worthy of any 3 year old... I decided to take Jerry's advice and look at it from HubPages perspective. To try and find the silver lining in the whole situation.
Sure enough, once I'd calmed down I realized they were actually doing me a favor and better sooner rather than later. So I made the changes they asked for, swallowed my pride and put up with them "reviewing" everything I submitted for a while and moved forward.
Guess what? I learned TONS about how the internet worked and what's good marketing practice from this experience.
Now that it's well behind me I'm actually grateful for the experience. Yes, it was a pain to redo all those Hubs but the education was worth it. And the lesson really sunk in.
Now I get more traffic from HubPages than I ever did before they Unpublished my stuff!
So I guess the whole point of this "rant" if you will, is to say, No matter how frustrated you get... Don't Quit! Learn from it and move forward.
Live Your Dreams!

Shelly - this is my first time to your blog - very solid article. Lots of us want to take short cuts, but the search engines and bookmarking sites are darn good at figuring them out.
Shelly - Great Article. Bookmarking and Social Bookmarking (yes - thank you for teaching me the difference between the two) are good for your information but you must do it the proper way.
You are completely right about many of the sites including bookmarking site and article submitting sites changing the rules even today. You must learn, adapt and change.
Thank you.
